Kenya Airways Launches Flights to Juba, South Sudan Kenya Airways (KQ), the largest airline of Kenya, has launched flights to Juba, South Sudan, June 7, 2010. The airline will operate direct flights daily on the 72-seat Embraer jet from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 1140hrs, from Juba International Airport at 1420hrs.
KQ will offer its passengers seamless connectivity provided passengers from Juba to Europe and the Far East as well as 39 other destinations across Africa. The launch of daily flights from Nairobi to Juba is seen as an instrument for conveying passengers to the city which is already considered one of the fastest growing in the world as traders and investors flocking to take advantage of existing opportunities.
The launch would complement other ongoing plans by the South Sudan to build a pipeline from Lamu in Juba and a line of railway from Uganda, which would help boost growth in the East African region . Since the opening of a consulate in Juba in February 2006, there was an increase in the number of individuals and organizations who have settled in the regional capital and other regions to do business.
Kenya Airways already serves over 30 destinations in Africa, some of which allowed him to return to profitability in 2009 (about Kshs. 2.67 billion). In financial results released last week, passenger traffic in southern Africa has increased by seven percent driven largely by the launch of operations in Maputo and Gaborone Ndola. increased frequency in Johannesburg, Lusaka and Harare have also been instrumental in the growth of traffic.
KQ joined other airlines already operating on the road to Juba, a move that should increase competition. It also means he now joins other local companies such as UAP, Equity and Kenya Commercial Bank Group who have invested in South Sudan.
