MarketplaceHot Water BeachPosted on November 23, 2010. Summertime Safety and fall time at the beach or in backyard pool - Stay out of hot water Summer is a wonderful time for friends and family. Whether in the backyard around the pool for a barbecue or at the lake cottage or waterfront cottage security is always a watchword during the summer - particularly on water and electricity. Water, moisture and electricity do not mix and are in fact a recipe for disaster.
What can you do to prevent electrical problems around water and increase your family's safety when it comes to summer time injuries and electrical accidents?
First keep in mind security. Electrical energy is both a wonderful servant, but a terrible master. In a mixture melt electrical energy from an ordinary AC electrical outlet and water - and it's a potential recipe for tragedy and sorrow. Worse, if by following simple rules of safety for all these tragedies are usually easy to prevent.
First of all remember what it takes for an accident of electric shock to occur is not much. It is not just pool water that may pose a danger, but simply a pool of electrically conductive moisture. This may mean skin moist or wet surfaces must shout the warning signs and signals or concerns. It may be a puddle on a section of bridge stone patio, it can be wet grass is mowed by an electric mower or it may be the obvious example as a wet surface on the pool deck. The results can be tragic and easily preventable.
What are the basic rules for electrical safety in the summer when it comes to being in moisture or water? Obviously, first ever Touched electrical cables, switches or appliances when standing in water or with wet hands. Then, equally obvious, if you use extension cords or electrical appliances elect5rical and one extension cords or appliances of their size and low power use drops in the water does not attempt to recover out of water until you have turned off the power at the main switch box. It can be as small as an electric rotisserie motor. It does not matter - disconnects the main switch box, no matter what. It is not worth the economics of risk and little time to not be complete and not play it safe for convenience only one second.
If you use electrical appliances, even those that are specifically intended for use around water and moisture - such as wet / dry vacuum cleaners or carpet steam always read and follow manufacturer's instructions. It's the same for pressure washers that you can use on a wooden chalet deck. If it is not certain that most manufactures now toll-free numbers for technical support. Call ahead of your trip - before your holiday or weekend when the electrical appliance manufacturing technical support line is open and you have access to a telephone at home or during work hours while in the city.
Finally, if you choose to use electrical devices to the outside - then the best and wisest choice is always to find the source and specially designed waterproof electrical appliances that are specifically designed for use outside. Remember that in most cases the same device, once installed will not be used in summer but also for the winter a harsh winter climate - perhaps even as hard as the Canadian winter.
The electrical device will spend the winter in cold climates where seals or plastic insulation can deteriorate or crack. It is always the worst when you play with electric power and security. Its false economy to do otherwise. Play it safe at the limit.
Ultimately, we can say that you can never be too safe when it comes to electrical safety during the summer safely. Play it safe and you can stay out of hot water in summer or autumn next time in the fall.
