Hostel Quentin Tarantino

As an experienced hiker of the two hemispheres currently many trips across the 32 provinces of China, this writer has come to depend heavily on hostels. Without them I could not financially (or emotionally) last the 10 months that I'm supposed to be on the road. As such, I brooded on the etymology of the word.

Hostel: a term that has become synonymous with world travel. Hospice medieval Latin, it has been coopted by more than 80 countries, starting in 1912 when Germany was the origin of the idea of the modern youth hostel. Yet, despite its global popularity, hostelling has continued to be a relatively underground experience.

Budget backpackers, considered both connected and vagrants, rely on hostels for their stay relatively affordable. But the hostels are a refuge from the road, a refugee camp for foreigners traveling abroad.
China may have opened its doors to westerners, but we are always urged by the national tourist office to check in expensive hotels while boarding economic luguan are for residents only.

Hot destinations, however, like Beijing, Yangshuo and Dali are renowned for their lively selection of hostels. I was all, and I've seen everything (there should be a reality series called 'Backpackers Behaving Badly). There is a hostel in particular, I will never forget, where the atmosphere was so deliciously relaxed that my intended two-day stopover turned into seven years.

20:00 Arrival in Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan stifling, and check into the hostel "Jumped": DAY 1. The attractive Chinese front-staff office in short shorts confirms what I've heard about Sichuan girls. Get a bed in a dormitory with 6 bunk beds and planted immediately. Woken at 2am by five inebriated Australians returning from a disco vociferously complaining that Chinese girls spend all day playing games dance online in Internet cafes, but a box night they were just standing against the wall.

DAY 2: Browse the local three-storey hostel, drying laundry whipping in the wind like the flag of the backpacker. Take a stroll around Chengdu then return to find my companions previous section replaced by a guy named Pickle from Hawaii who road a motorcycle in Sichuan. Pickle first words to me were "mind if I smoke a bowl?" At five o'clock a young Dutch girl fell drunk in his bunk and goes to nothing but her g-string. The next morning, she said: "I dreenk haalf haalf daytime sleep UN. I need to sleep less, I caan dreenk more. "I'd be foolish not to stay another day.

DAY 3: A newcomer to our room, a graduate of the University of Oregon named Sven (who looks nothing like Sven). Pickle wakes up at 14 hours and think that our little clique Americans have lunch at a Tex-Mex restaurant across town. I feel guilty not eating Sichuan hot pot as I'm supposed to do, but my conscience is quickly lost in a world of cheese and refried beans. Stir in the night is hopping, the open-air courtyard crowded with people from every country imaginable sitting around drinking and chatting, their accented conversations always begin with "Where are you?" Followed by "Where are you? "Happy laughter is a constant. Our world leaders would do well to study life in a hostel. A guy wearing a British shirt with upturned collar alternates between hitting on girls pre-China office (now uniform been wearing skirts too small) and asking everyone "Are you going out tonight?" Me, Pickle and Sven opt for watching the Quentin Tarantino blood-and-breasts fest "Hostel" on the DVD show. It's almost like fried ... except everyone killed.

DAY 4: Said British guy, his collar more than half overturned, fell on the couch drinking hall.
