Hello From Austria - An Excursion to Slovenia and Italy - Monte Lussari After yesterday's exciting trip to Graz, we planned an outing even today: an excursion to the so-called "Drei-La¤ndereck", an area where Austria, Italy and Slovenia meet. So we we left early in the morning to drive from my home province of Styria along the A2 motorway in the Austrian province of Carinthia. The drive through the mountains of Western Styria is extremely scenic and pleasant panoramas continued into the picturesque province Carinthia (Ka¤rnten "in German).
The province of Carinthia is the southernmost province of Austria, it is close to 280 km long, but in some areas only 45 to 50 km wide. The western part of the province is characterized by high Austrian Alps, while the eastern part features wider valleys and highlands. Carinthia is a popular tourist destination, especially the landscapes of lakes (eg Waśrthersee Ossiacher See, Millsta¤tter See, Weissensee and many others) are a huge tourist attraction in the summer and winter, the province has several excellent ski resorts for alpine enthusiasts.
Our destination today is a mountain called "Mangart" located in Slovenia and 2679 m from the fourth highest peak in the Julian Alps. This part of the Alps stretching from north-eastern Italy to Slovenia and was named after Julius Caesar. The predominant mineral in this area is limestone which has many peaks and jagged foreground.
The mountain Mangart is more easily reached from the Italian side, so we crossed the Austro-Italian-Thaśrl Maglern. Because Austria and Italy are two countries of the EU, we do not even need to show our passports, no more and continued in the border town of Tarvisio and turned left into a mountain valley Which brings us to our destination. Our drive took us through picturesque mountain villages that seemed rather remote and isolated, and less than half an hour we arrived at Tarvisio the beautiful "Predil Lake", a beautiful lake with water that is green and turquoise surrounded by a panorama of towering mountains. We stopped for a brief break and continued our ascent up the Julian Alps last laces different fortifications and the remains from the First World War I. Mountains Many in this area were actually scenes of mountain warfare that characterized the First World War. Major military operations took place at the right in the area of high mountains between mid 1915 and late 1917 and more than 300,000 Austro-Hungarian and Italian soldiers were killed in the fighting.
Finally we arrived at the Italian-Slovenian border and we still had to present our passports. We continued further up the slopes of the mountain Mangart, but our car began to overheat. My brother stopped and opened the hood, and we began to conclude that the cooling fan motor does not work. Accordingly, we would be unable to continue to climb the steep roads and had to turn around and return to the valley.
We were all a little disappointed because we were not able to reach our mountain destination, but we were quick on our feet and decided to think of another place to visit. My brother has suggested returning to the area of Tarvisio in Italy and take the cable car up Monte San Lussari. Since the road was either downhill or even our car was able to cool and we could continue our trip on mostly flat terrain.
South Tarvisio we crossed the village Camporosso whose name is said to return to red toads that were said to populate the region. We stopped at the base station of the funicular of Monte Lussari, then the three of us took a ride in one of the 91 cabins. We were able to take my brother's dog with us and enjoyed eleven minute long drive up the mountain. As a.
